Octane 2024 Features

What’s new in the Octane 2024.1 Preview

Today’s preview release of 2024.1 gives artists early access to new features coming to Octane in the next release:

  • New Post FX Shader Graphs: Full support for Texture Nodes / OSLshader nodes in the AOV compositor
  • Powerful Denoiser AOV Nodes and filter graphs (GPU and CPU)
  • New Geometry Pipeline – less memory, better performance
  • Major hardware ray-tracing optimizations on both CUDA and Metal
  • Smaller geometry memory footprint
  • Mixed platform network rendering between CUDA and Metal GPUs

Powerful Denoiser AOV Nodes and filter graphs (GPU and CPU)

New Denoise AOV nodes – adapted to Octane from the Open Image Denoise framework – are now supported on both GPU / CPU and can be used to denoise any Render AOV pass and create powerful and granular denoising filters in any composition AOV output graph, including per light / per beauty pass denoising and OSL driven denoising effects. It also works with the PMC and Info kernels and all AOV outputs.

New Post FX Shader Graphs: Full support for Textures and OSL shader nodes in the AOV compositor

In Octane 2024, you can now use any texture as a layer in an output AOV, with the new “Texture” output AOV layer node – from an individual image file to an arbitrarily complex node tree. This includes OSL textures for custom effect layers and image generators to be used during compositing, and a new “Output AOV parameter” texture node to build effect layers.

Ray Tracing Hardware Acceleration speedups on Apple M3 GPUs:

Octane X 2024 is being optimized for new ray tracing hardware on M3 Apple GPUS – and already seeing 2x to 12x(!) speed gains in heavily instanced scenes:

New Geometry Pipeline – less memory, better performance

An overhauled geometry pipeline that speeds up rendering, reduces memory usage, unifies geometry data across CUDA and Metal, and fully utilizes RT raytracing with ‘RT core-only’ rendering.

Mixed Platform Network Rendering

Octane 2024.1 introduces a unified memory layout, allowing – for the first time – network rendering across both Metal (macOS) and CUDA, providing studios using Octane X for Metal the ability to use near unlimited Windows GPUs as render nodes.

Full Utilization of Ray-Tracing hardware

New in Octane 2024.1, ray tracing hardware is used for all mesh primitives and geometry including hair, spheres and displacement triangles, providing maximum hardware acceleration on modern hardware.

‘RT core-only’ rendering increases speed, stability, and efficiency by reducing dependencies on system memory and out-of-core geometry, maximizes the usage of RT core hardware, and bypasses the complexity of rendering with different ray-tracing types.

Smaller Memory Footprint for Geometry

‘RT core-only’ rendering in Octane 2024.1 leads to across-the-board memory reductions on Windows and Linux, creating greater efficiency and stability within Octane Standalone and in Octane DCC plugin integrations, removing memory pressure on the host DCC applications.

Octane 2024.1 Features in Development

Native MaterialX support:

OctaneGPT at your service!

A large Language Model service that can provide help inside Octane – covering all documentation, tutorials and even code – the service can create nodes, scripts, shaders and generate scene and assets interactively form text, voice and even screen sharing:

Localized Language support:

Coming Soon in Octane 2024.1:

  • Unreal Engine style decal support in core
  • Rest Position Nodes

Coming up in Octane 2024 are next generation ML and spatial rendering toolsets, including:

Meshlet Streaming, Neural Rendering, Light Field baking and playback for XR and Virtual Production, Brigade temporal denoising, Material X looks, OpenPBR, Multi-stream headless rendering, and AI rendering and operator node graphs.

What’s on the 2024.x roadmap this year:

  • Headless rendering with multi-render and multi-engine live linking (Blender, UE, C4D and standalone)
  • Neural Rendering: NeRF, Splats and generative AI scene nodes
  • Meshlet Geometry Streaming
  • New Render Network manager for live and offline GPU workloads
  • Volumetric Live Compositor for Virtual Production and Mixed Reality and Light Field displays
  • Improved BRDF and shader support for faster single sample quality output
